A colleague recently asked me "if you could focus on one thing for search engine optimization for a website what would it be?"
Easy answer: content.
Content is king.
When is the last time you updated your website with fresh content? Do you have any new articles? Press releases? Upcoming events?
Don't re-write your website for the sake of something new. Make it meaningful. Perhaps, your products and services offerings need to be updated from the old, stale text that's been on your website for five years collecting search engine spider dust.
Content is why blogs are popular. A regular blog writer/editor contributes new content on a regular basis. Humans like to read new content (CNN, ESPN, etc.) and search engines like it too.
(Of course, content should include targeted keywords, anchor text links, etc., but my friend's question limited me to only one answer.)
