If you're a business person interested in implementing social media into your marketing strategy, you might have heard that Twitter can be a great way to stay up-to-date with your loyal customers. However, many business people become easily frustrated with Twitter when they do not see immediate results. What they often do not realize is that Twitter is not simply a marketing tool: It is a cornerstone of social media, with an emphasis on the social. It's about making friend-to-friend relationships, not about instantly gaining a gaggle of tweeps.
As you get started in the Twitter business world, you might keep in mind a couple Twitter truisms that could help you find greater success.
If you follow them, they just might follow you
There is, of course, no guarantee that those you follow will reciprocate; they could potentially see you as spam or a bot, especially since you’re (what they might view as) a personality-less company. However, it’s a risk you should take in hopes of gaining more followers. At the very least, the person you are now following could click on your feed and see who or what you represent. That is reason enough to keep your tweets interesting and follow-worthy.
Friendship is a 2-way street, so retweet and reply
You might be tempted as a business to focus mainly on strategizing your tweets or with setting up a game plan as to how to get more followers to your Twitter. But what about the followers you already have?
Maintaining a friendship means communicating on a regular basis. Twitter is the same: Your company’s Twitter will not keep followers unless you make a point to continue the relationships you have already established. Give your Twitter feed a personality of sorts. Try to win over new followers, but retweet and respond to those you currently have. If someone tweets a question, take the time to answer it. The beauty of Twitter is in the making and keeping of friendships, and these do not happen en masse.
More tweets are better than none
A steady, well-managed stream of tweets every day is far better than one superbly written tweet per week. instead of logging into Twitter once a week to see if you have more followers. Be consistent with your tweets: Few people appreciate getting 50 tweets from one person on their Twitter feed in one day and then having only 3 tweets from that same person the next. Make your tweets interesting and not just free ads where you pitch your business.
Again, don't get discouraged when your Twitter isn't an instant success. You'll find that, as with any good friendship, Twitter takes time and a great deal of loving to get your Twitter into perfect shape.
